Choosing the Right King When Control Is on the Line
Who do you trust to rule your life?
It is a question we often answer subconsciously, but it shapes everything. At some point, all of us face the temptation to grab control, to protect what we fear losing, or to assert our version of what is right. But Jesus shows us a different way.
In Mark 12, Jesus tells a parable that hits a nerve. It is not just a story about tenants and a vineyard. It is a story about what we do when we are asked to surrender authority.
“He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’”

Power Grabs Are Nothing New
From the beginning, humanity has struggled to live under God’s authority. We want the blessings of the vineyard, but we do not want to answer to the Owner.
In the parable, the tenants mistake patience for permission. They believe they can claim what was never theirs simply because judgment is delayed.
The religious leaders listening to Jesus knew exactly what He meant. The story was about them, but it is also about us. We all have moments when we reject the rightful King in order to keep our own kingdoms.
Surrender Does Not Mean Defeat
Jesus does not tell this story to shame. He tells it to warn and to invite.
The tenants reject the son, but he is not just a messenger. He is the cornerstone. He is the very foundation of what God is building.
“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”

Surrendering to Jesus does not mean losing our identity or autonomy. It means finding our lives on the firmest foundation possible.
When God Disrupts Your Plans
Later in the same chapter, Jesus is questioned about paying taxes. The Pharisees are not curious. They are trying to trap Him. But Jesus refuses to play their political games.
He says, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”
It is not just a clever response. It is a piercing truth. Everything bears an image. Coins bear Caesar’s image. But we bear God’s.
We do not belong to the powers of this world. We belong to the One who made us.

Living Under the Right Authority
Jesus is not just a wise teacher. He is the rightful King. He comes not with coercion, but with compassion. Not to crush, but to call.
He has every right to claim authority, and yet He lays down His life so we can live under grace.
Let’s stop resisting the hand that holds everything together. Let’s give back what belongs to God. Our hearts. Our choices. Our future.
Because when Jesus is in charge, we do not lose control. We gain peace.
